On September 30, 2019, by the decision of the Administrative Council of the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS), the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics was established as the 7th Department of the School of Dentistry. On October 1, 2019, at the administrative meeting of the School of Dentistry, Dr. P. Oyun-Enkh (PhD), the senior lecturer of the department, was appointed as the head of the new department. The initial team included Dr. B. Bayarchimeg (PhD), senior lecturer and associate professor; Dr. Kh. Oyunkhishig (M.Sc.), lecturer; Dr. O. Tsetsen (M.Sc.), assistant lecturer; Dr. B. Gereltuya, dental staff; and dental assistant M. Tumenjargal (BSN).

Currently, the faculty members consist of Assoc. Prof. B. Bayarchimeg, head of the department; Dr. P. Oyun-Enkh, senior lecturer; Dr. Kh. Oyunkhishig, lecturer; Dr. E. Nyamsuren (PhD), lecturer; Dr. S. Buyanbileg (PhD), assistant lecturer; Dr. O. Michidgerel, endodontist (M.Sc.), M. Tumenjargal, teaching assistant and Sh. Batbaljir, dental assistant.

For undergraduate education, the department teaches the following subjects:

• “Dental Ergonomics, Infection Control” (REI-D32) for 3rd-year dental students in the School of Dentistry;

• “Endodontics I” (REE-D42) and “Periodontics I” (REP-D42) for 4th-year students;

• “Endodontics II” (REE-D52)  and “Periodontics II” (REP-D52)  for 5th-year students;

• “Clinical practice in restorative dentistry I” (RED-D61) for 6th-year students.

Since September 2021, we have admitted 4 resident doctors each into two specialized programs—Periodontics and Endodontics—and successfully graduated the first cohort in 2023.

The Department of Periodontics and Endodontics aims to develop these fields, train competent professionals, conduct educational and research activities, and introduce new technologies. Our team provides a range of services to the public, including periodontal surgical and non-surgical treatments, regenerative surgeries, flap surgeries, plastic surgeries, root canal treatments, retreatment of root canals, management of complications in root canal treatments, and emergency care for periodontal and endodontic diseases.
